History

aftshot.jpg

Both Marlin & Maria spent almost 5 months scouring the south west Turkish coastline, studying and observing the various methods of gulet construction and looking for the perfect Turkish Gulet...

And just before Christmas 2017 … after personally inspecting 48 other gulets, they finally found her;

Yarim Adhali

"Yarim Adhali"  (Turkish for small island) was professionally designed by Atlas Yacht Designers in Marmaris, Turkey. Then, both expertly and lovingly built in Bozburun by long time local Harbour Master “Crazy Durmush” and launched in 2012 to be used exclusively as his private family yacht.

With strength as a primary goal she was constructed entirely using solid Mahogany for the frame, and thick (35mm) Teak for the hull planking.

Her “iron sail” is the legendary German work horse “DEUTZ” with 248 proud pony’s comfortably pushing her along at a happy 8kts.

After purchasing her we then spent 6 months going through the  intricate process of re-registration, from her existing Turkish flag to full commercial UK registration, adopting London as her home port. Thru out this time she was re-named & basically reborn until finally we were ready to set her sails,  aim her for the sunset and proudly sail into her exiting new life as MS Black Marlin!!!!

Three weeks and some 1600nm later we arrived home, and to a heart warming local reception sailed triumphantly into the harbour of Mahon, Maria’s home town and the beautiful Capital of Menorca... our home for many winters to come!

The moment that Black Marlin arrived at

During the following winter months we were lucky to find Astilleros Llompart in Ciutadella, and under the expert tuition of Jaume LLompart Snr (one of the last true “mestre d’aixes” or  wooden boat “magicians” in the Balearics) we dry-docked her and painstakingly striped her entire hull back to bare wood, re-nailing, califaunting  and finally repainting her undersides with the highest quality marine grade primer’s and antifouling paints available today.

Modern products with traditional application techniques and expert knowhow… the winning formula !!!!

Both Marlin and Maria are fully aware of the huge amount of maintenance a 69 ton wooden boat demands….. every year……. but the love affair they have with their Black Marlin along with their infallible work ethic and professionalism combine to make this the safest, most comfortable, enjoyable and stylish experience aboard any Gulet sailing in the Balearics today, maybe even the entire Mediterranean !!!
